The app Unveil My World is a tool to explore the data coming from the My World Survey. The survey was iniciated by the United Nations to find out the needs of the world population to formulate new development goals on that basis.
What is the survey and the data about?
The data contains information about the voter like age, gender or country, six priorities about development like education or better health care, which people could choose from a list out of 16 and additional text data about the voting reason or additional priorities. Those additional contents were not mendatory. People could participate via the website, apps or via offline methods. More than 2 million people participated.
What offers the tool?
The collected data is very complex. On the one hand there are global information like "What is the number one priority of the world?" and on the other hand there are very hidden and small pieces of information like "What is the vote reason of this one 23 years old man from Nigeria that voted for better job opportunities?". The tool tries to give an overview about both of these detail levels.
At the top there are normalized stacked bar charts that represent basic voter choices like gender or age. Every bar chart is interactive. Below there are text comments of some voters. When a facette like a specific range of age is selected, the other facettes, which are not selected, align dynamically. This makes it possible to dive more and more into the data and have allways a look at the whole. There is also a treemap showing all the countries where a country can be selected from. The comments below also correspond to the selected facettes. The more narrow the filters are, the more comments are from people that have something in common. This makes it for example possible to see what people think and voted that have the same education, age and gender like oneself.
The combination of the two detail levels gives the opportunity to fill the default priorities with meaningful content. When for example searching what low educated men younger than 20 years from Ghana, that voted via offline methods for better education want you get profound results like "free education as well" or "provision for library". While searching you also find out that there are 173 voters that fit to this filter selection and that there are surprisingly much people in Ghana that voted via sms in comparison to the rest of the world.
